WORK/PROJECT: Volunteers will seriously be engaged in the construction of Kindergarten school block for the little children of the Community. The project is an initiative of Parent Teacher Association of the local primary school in closed collaboration with the chiefs and people of the community. The main objective of this project is to provide classroom facilities for the children who are of school going-age but continue to roam in and around the vicinity. Due to lack of the facility in the community parents, especially mothers find it extremely difficult and puzzling to keep these children in school. The project if completed will address appreciably high level of truancy amongst the teenagers and also promote and enhance economic activities of their mothers. Deepening the knowledge base of the youth in ICT as well as cultivating the culture of reading and research at early age, a library will be inculcated into the structure. An estimated figure of 300 school going children and out of school children are expected to benefit from the project when successfully complete.

As the work progresses, the volunteers will have the privilege to interact with these little children most of them who will memorable having a feel of a foreign personality of different colour in their community. Volunteers will be encouraged to share educational materials such note books, crayons.

Volunteers will be tasked to continue in their demonstrations the usual spirits of volunteerism as they carry out their voluntary responsibilities in the area of plastering, mixing and casting of concrete, flooring, roofing, fixing of windows and doors etc, etc. No special skills or previous experiences will be required from the volunteers as they will be under close supervisions of technical personnel to be provided by the local authorities.

LOCATION: The New-Ningo community where the project is located is a compact, small busy town located within the administrative district of Ga Dangwe of the Greater Accra Region. The capital town of the district is called Dodowa which has the administrative responsibility of the entire area.  The population of the community is approximately 20,000 inhabitants. It’s geographically located at the south-east zone of Ghana, lying along the coastal belt of Gulf of Guinea.  It is in the middle of the two towns of Prampram and Old-Ningo. The project community formed part of a traditional area called Great Ningo.  The traditional area is constituted by more than 30 towns and villages but the main two communities which formed the nucleus of the area are Old-Ningo and New-Ningo. The distance separating these sister communities is just about 2km which is an equivalence of 10 minutes drive.

The people of the traditional area, who are of Ga tribes, have a rich cultural festival known as “Homowo” which is being celebrated annually in August by all Gas of the Greater Accra. The occasion is usually being celebrated by the two communities, together with other adjoining towns and villages. As a result of its serenity, and closeness to the Ocean, city dwellers from Accra, Tema and beyond travel all the way to this community to get-off with the week-ends, holidays and leisure periods at the beaches of New-Ningo. Those who have participated in the preceding camps on this project have testified there is no better place if to really understand the enormity and tranquillity of an Ocean. The pre-dominant occupation of the people is fishing.  Large segment of women folk based their livelihood on fishing, fish processing such as fish smoking and drying and other commercial activities serving the larger population of the community and farming rural communities surrounding the town.  The distance from the national capital, Accra is about 48 km.

ACCOMODATION: Volunteers will be housed in the premises of a local Health Centre located within the community; sleeping on mattresses lay on cemented floors and some locally manufactured mats to be provided by the community will be made possible. Volunteers are encouraged to bring along sleeping bags.  Ingredients for the preparation of variety of meals will be purchased and supplied to the camp; volunteers will share in the duties of preparing and cooking of meals for the camp.

SPECIAL REMARK: Lots of commercial activities can be transacted by the volunteers in this community or travel to nearest town (Old-Ningo) about 10 minutes drive. Accessibility of Internet and postal services are not available in New-Ningo but in adjoining communities of Prampram and Old-Ningo. The industrial towns of Tema and Ashiaman are the closest biggest business centres at 12kms where Forex Bureaus and Super Markets can be located as well as public telephones facilities. Taxis and private/public transports ply between Ningo and Accra daily at a very moderate fare.
