VOLU, during Easter breaks, organizes leadership training programmes for potential leaders who are selected by the National Secretariat upon the recommendation of the regions. Selection is based upon the number of camps attended and leadership qualities displayed during camping periods. A workcamp is run for these selected volunteers where they are schooled in the rudiments of camp leadership. The trainees learn from old and experienced camp leaders such things as keeping records, accounting, promotion of understanding among campers, and achieving project targets.
The training course usually lasts for two weeks. And the newly trained leaders are attached to some special camp during the peak season to acquire further skills from more experienced leaders. If they prove capable, they are appointed leader in subsequent camps. It is interesting to note that volu played host to the first three leadership training courses for the West African zone of the CCIVS – in 1958 – 1962, and 1971. To date, there have been eleven leadership training courses and camp. |
