Benefit of Attending Camps

It must be stressed here that all voluntary service programmes provide some satisfaction.  They primarily benefit both participants and the communities.  Otherwise, volunteers would not return – some of them, year after year to workcamps and other social service programmes. Work camping holds the prospect of adventure, of international contact and of learning and growing.  At camp special provision is made for study activities aimed at deepening volunteers’ knowledge of the project location and broadening their general cultural values.

Volunteers are encouraged to develop a greater awareness for the numerous social problems affecting the rural folks, the socially underprivileged.  Programmes are designed in such a way as to enable volunteers to play a constructive part in helping alleviate such problems. By meeting their foreign counterparts who have different socio-economic backgrounds, they are able, through exchange of ideas and experiences, to increase their awareness of other lifestyles. Through this, volunteers gain a great understanding of the differences between various groups of people.

Also, by living together and functioning as a team, the spirit and sense of responsibility is fostered among volunteers.  Inter–racial and inter-tribal marriages between volunteers and campers as well as with non–campers have been made possible through camp attendance.  Finally, at the end of a camp, volunteers realize that they were there not just to get to know one another or to escape from family problems and other responsibilities.  When they go home they take with them not only empty pockets but also a happiness that is hard to match; the happiness of being young and helping someone they do not even know.  Volunteers’ awareness of unity and patriotism are deepened.
