PROJECT/WORK: The volunteers will be task to undertake a series of activities geared towards the provision of residential accommodation for medical doctors and other health workers posted to the community in a bid to improve and promote the health care of the people. Currently, Medical Doctors and paramedics who are posted to the community to deliver health care to the people more often than not refuse to accept posting to the area due to lack of residential accommodation. The consequential effects of this situation have led to unrelenting loss of lives specially the aged, pregnant women and children.
In VOLU’s determination to fix the situation, is effectively collaborating with the District authorities and the traditional custodians of the project community to provide descent residential bungalows for the health staff to the area. Work has already begun on the project by volunteers in the last Winter/spring work camp period.
The community pledged in their continue efforts to work hand-in-hand with the volunteers as soon as they resume work on the project. The construction materials to be required for the project will be provided by the district assembly to ensure its completion. During the project execution volunteers will be required to perform some activities under the supervision of a construction technician to be attached to project, to ensure completion of the project. They will be expected to help in the mixing and conveying of cement mortar and blocks to the local masons who actively will be involved in the construction process. Volunteers who perhaps engaging themselves for the first in a construction works will be encouraged trying their hands in every aspect of the project. In fact, it will be a learning experience for first -timers.
LOCATION: The project will be hosted by a community called Adidwan; a community located within the administrative district of the Mampong-Ashanti Municipality. Adidwan is estimated to have a population of about 1,000 inhabitants whose main economic activity is crop farming such as maize, cassava, plantain etc. The town has a market which is fairly patronized by the inhabitants and the people of the surrounding communities. The project community can be found between Mampong, the district capital and Ejura-Ashanti on the highway which links the Southern and Northern zones of the country. It is about 24km away from the district capital and 16 Km from Ejura-Sekyeredumasi the adjoining district.
Mampong Municipal, which is one of the Twenty-six (26) Administrative Districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, is located on the northern part of the region, and shares boundaries with Atebubu, Sekyere East, Afigya-Sekyere, and Ejura-Sekyeredumasi districts to the north
east, south, and west respectively.
The District is located within longitudes of 0.05 and 1.30 degrees west and latitudes 6.55 degrees and 7.30 degrees north, covering a total land area of 2346km2. It has about 220 settlements with about 70 percent being rural. The rural areas are mostly found in the Afram Plains portion of the District where Communities with less than fifty (50) people are scattered here and there.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be hosted in a local housing; sleeping on mattresses on the floor, thus bringing a warm sleeping bag is highly recommended. Food ingredients will be provided and kitchen for cooking by the volunteers will also be made available. All volunteers are expected to engage in the preparation of meals for the camp on rotational basis.
LANGUAGE: English will be the official language in the camp; high proficiency will not be a requirement.
PARTICIPATION FEE: All prospective volunteers on this and other projects will be required to pay participation fee of 250 Euros per project but 150 Euros for any additional project.
EXTRA INFO: Forex Bureaux as well banks are not available in the project community and therefore, it will be impossible for volunteers to change money or transact any financial business whilst living in the community. But these facilities and post offices could be accessed at the next community called Manpong or the city of Kumasi. Electricity from the national grid is sustainably available to provide the energy needs of the volunteer during their stay at Adidwan. Health facilities can be accessed at the local clinic but the major hospital is at Manpong or Kumasi. |
